I am a sociology professor at the Florida State College at Jacksonville. Previously I taught at Montana State University and Arizona State University. Most of my interests, both academic and personal, revolve around issues of race & ethnicity, politics, health, sport and science. For fun I enjoy swimming and travel... Lately I have been enjoying the music of Jason Molina, who died at 39 years old in 2013 of alcoholism induced organ failure. His solo work, as well as with his bands Songs: Ohia and the Magnolia Electric Company, exude a warmth and sadness that makes me feel like I am listening to him painfully navigating his life in front of my eyes.
